The Browning Double Automatic Shotgun is a short recoil operated [2] semi-automatic (Auto Loading) 12 gauge shotgun with a 2 ¾ inch chamber. This shotgun was offered in both aluminum and steel receiver configurations[3] with the aluminum receivers featuring a variety of finish colors.[4] The 3 versions offered include the Standard as the only steel receiver version, Twelvette, and Twentyweight which used the aluminium receiver. All Double Automatic's are 12 gauge. Various configurations were available for choke, barrel length, and barrel type. The firearm was produced between 1955 and 1971, with production volume of approximately 67,000.

John Browning himself called it his greatest achievement at the time, of course that was before the 1911.45 caliber semiautomatic handgun. If you own one of these guns and it has a letter in the serial number, your gun would have been made after 1953 and the letter is a code that represents; G = Lightweight, M = Standard Weight, V = 12 Gauge. Early 1960s, serial number; HAMILTON DOUBLE BARRELL SHOTGUN. SN 3944.HAMILTON DOUBLE BARRELL SHOTGUN. 28-1/4” ribbed bbls.

Import guns were in the same serial number sequence as all other Baby Brownings. The Browning Arms Company never referred to the gun as the “Baby” in their literature-instead, it was simply known as the “Browning.25 Caliber Automatic Pistol.”. Some time between 1903 and 1939 is the best guess by Browning. The gun was manufactured at the F.N. Factory in Belgium. Most records were lost. From the Browning Website: 'Beginning with Serial Number 1 to approximately 228,000. Exact production figures are not available. Year of manufacture on Pre-World War II production is strictly a guess.'

Action[edit]

This firearm features a unique loading port on the left side of the receiver.[5] As the first round is loaded, the shell is lifted by a mechanism and chambered by the bolt; once the bolt is closed, the lifting mechanism returns to the resting position below the loading port, where the next round can then be loaded. Upon firing the chambered round, the shell in the loading port is automatically chambered. The total capacity is 2 with 1 chambered round and 1 in the loading port.

While every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided on serial numbers and dates of manufacture are accurate, records on early production models such as the Auto-5 and Superposed shotguns were not included due to the complexity of numbers, models and grades offered. Also, there have been unique limited edition models that did not follow our regular serial number configurations and they are not included in this listing.
