Thupparivaalan translated – Detective is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Mysskin. Vishal, who also stars in the lead role, is the film’s producer. Prasanna, K. Bhagyaraj, Anu Emmanuel, Andrea Jeremiah, and Vinay also appear in the film.
The film and its titular protagonist were both loosely based on British author Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective character Sherlock Holmes, who is given credit in the film’s opening scene.

Plot
Dhivakar and his family begin the film by celebrating his birthday. He and his son are killed and burned to death by a lightning strike. A man gropes a woman in a movie theatre, causing a minor commotion that is prevented by ACP Paul Dhanarajan, who later dies in the middle of a police conference.
The focus of the story switches to detective Kaniyan Poongundran, who lives with his partner Manohar. Mallika is discovered by them both during a pickpocketing incident in which she is apprehended. She later goes to Kaniyan’s house to serve as a housekeeper.
Naveen, a schoolboy, comes to Kaniyan and Manohar one day with the news that his pet German Spitz (incorrectly identified as a Pomeranian), Nemo, has been shot and asks them to locate him the murderer.
The bullet from Nemo’s body is given to them by Naveen. Kaniyan discovers that it is a ricocheted 9mm bullet from Nemo.
He discovers a tooth at the crime scene, whose owner is identified as Swarnavel, a retired university physics professor who divorced his wife because he blamed her for their son’s death.
He was previously living alone and employed as a stockbroker. Meanwhile, a shady man called Kamalesh visits a travel agency to deliver a sofa stuffed with cash to five people suspected of being assassins: Devil, Muthu, Pritha, a stout man, and a bald man who run the agency.
Kaniyan recalls a news story about an incident involving Dhivakar and his son’s deaths and visits Mrs. Dhivakar’s home, where she reveals that thunder preceded the lightning strike that killed Dhivakar and their son. Swarnavel was also present at a nearby construction site on the day of the incident, according to Kaniyan.
He then assumes that Swarnavel used artificial lightning to destroy Dhivakar. When the assassins realize Kaniyan is after them, Devil disposes of Swarnavel’s skull, which he had killed earlier.
As Kaniyan and Manohar visit Dhivakar’s office, they discover that a tender that was supposed to go to Dhivakar is now with Ram Prasad, the chairman, and CEO of the company with which Dhivakar competed. Ram Prasad is assassinated before they can meet him.
Kamalesh hires Chinese mercenaries to kill Kaniyan under the guise of inviting him and Manohar to a Chinese restaurant enraged that their client Ram had to be killed.
Before they arrive, Kaniyan defeats them and discovers Kamalesh’s involvement, but Kamalesh is seduced and killed by Pritha (but Pritha is seen by Kaniyan while leaving).
As Pritha and the bald man attempt to flee, they are cornered on all sides, resulting in a police pursuit. Soon after, the bald man commits suicide by seppuku, allowing Pritha to flee the scene. The next day, Pritha tries unsuccessfully to kill Kaniyan in a shopping mall but is saved by Mallika.
In a hotel, Kaniyan and Manohar encounter Police Inspector Madhivanan and ACP Vijayakumar, who is investigating another failed assassination attempt. Muthu intends to use a poison dart on Kaniyan, but Manohar gets caught in the crossfire and is taken to the hospital.
They discover that Manohar and ACP Paul were both struck by the same dart. Kaniyan goes to the theatre to test this and discovers that the same individual purchased three tickets in separate rows on the same day.
The address is derived from the credit card details. They raid the travel agency, and Devil assassinates Muthu to hide his identity.
They discover several lightning-related physics books as well as a computer that produces artificial lighting. Kaniyan receives an SMS threat, stating that his loved ones are in jeopardy. He ensures Manohar’s safety in the hospital, but Mallika is stabbed by Devil and he is unable to save her.

Kaniyan, who is bound by a chain, reveals how he discovered Devil’s backstory (including the fact that Devil and his crew were responsible for many unsolved murders of foreign tourists on Indian soil) and informs him that the police have been informed.
Devil is enraged by this and attempts to stab Kaniyan, but Manohar untangles him just in time. Despite their roughly equal size and experience in hand-to-hand fighting, Kaniyan wins the upper hand over Devil in the ensuing scuffle, stabbing Devil several times.
In his last moments, Devil apologizes to Naveen for killing Nemo. Later, when Naveen returns home from school one afternoon, he discovers a Pomeranian puppy in a basket at his doorstep, along with a note bearing Kaniyan’s name (as a gift from Kaniyan, compensating him for the loss of his pet).
